Reporters Without Borders relieved at release of Slim Boukhdir

Reporters Without Borders today voiced its relief at the news of the release of Slim Boukhdir four months before the end of his sentence. The freelance journalist has been held since 26 November 2007 in very harsh prison conditions at the civil jail in Sfax, 230 kilometres south of the capital.

Boukhdir, 39, is correspondent for the pan-Arab London-based newspaper al Quds al Arabi and for the website of Satellite television station al-Arabiya. He also posts articles on several websites, particularly Tunisnews and Kantara.

“We are absolutely delighted at the release of Slim Boukhdir. Like Mohammed Abbu before him, he should never have been in prison in the first place,” the worldwide press freedom organisation said.

“He was deprived of his freedom for 238 days and treated like a common criminal simply for constantly exposing the abuses of power. We would like to see the decision of the Tunisian authorities to free him as evidence of their goodwill”, it added.

“The Tunisian state must put an end to the harassment of independent journalists and their families and to seizures of the opposition and foreign press. The authorities should also allow free access to the Internet so as to create a space for freedom and to ensure free expression in Tunisia”.

Boukhdir, who was released in the late afternoon today, told Reporters Without Borders that he wanted to thank the international community which campaigned for his release. Despite harsh jail conditions – poor hygiene, threats from his fellow prisoners and deprivation of letters and independent newspapers – the journalist said that he had “kept his spirits up high”.

He was arrested on 26 November 2007 during a check on papers of passengers using a collective taxi between Sfax and Tunis. He was immediately taken before cantonal court in Sakiet Ezzit in the Sfax suburbs and sentenced, at the end of an unfair trial, to a year in prison for “insulting an official in the exercise of his duty”, “breach of accepted standards of behaviour” and “refusing to produce his identity papers for police”. On the day of his arrest, he was travelling to the capital to reclaim his passport, which he had been deprived of since 2004.

Reporters sans frontières exprime sa joie suite à la libération de Slim Boukhdir

Reporters sans frontières a exprimé son soulagement à l’annonce de la libération, le 21 juillet 2008, de Slim Boukhdir, intervenue quatre mois avant le terme de sa peine. Le journaliste indépendant a souffert de conditions de détention très difficiles à la prison civile de Sfax (230 km au sud de Tunis), où il était incarcéré depuis le 26 novembre 2007.

“Nous accueillons la libération de Slim Boukhdir avec une joie immense. Comme Mohammed Abbou avant lui, Slim Boukhdir n’avait pas sa place en prison. Il a été privé de sa liberté pendant 238 jours et traité comme un criminel pour avoir dénoncé les dérives du pouvoir. Nous voulons voir dans la décision des autorités tunisiennes un gage de bonne volonté”, a déclaré l’organisation.

“Il faut que l’Etat tunisien mette un terme au harcèlement des journalistes indépendants et de leurs familles, aux saisies intempestives de la presse d’opposition et étrangère. Les autorités doivent également permettre un libre accès à la Toile pour les internautes. Cela afin de créer des espaces de libertés et garantir la liberté d’expression en Tunisie”, a ajouté Reporters sans frontières.

Slim Boukhdir a été libéré le 21 juillet 2008 en fin d’après-midi. Contacté par Reporters sans frontières, le journaliste a remercié la communauté internationale qui s’est mobilisée pour demander sa libération. Malgré des conditions de détention difficiles (conditions d’hygiène insuffisantes, intégrité physique menacée par ses codétenus, privé de correspondance, de journaux indépendants), Slim Boukhdir a affirmé “avoir gardé un état d’esprit très fort”.

Slim Boukhdir avait été arrêté le 26 novembre 2007 lors d’un contrôle d’identité des passagers d’un taxi collectif reliant Sfax à Tunis. Il avait été immédiatement déféré à la justice et condamné, au terme d’un procès inique, à un an de prison pour “outrage à fonctionnaire dans l’exercice de ses fonctions”, “atteinte aux bonnes moeurs” et “refus de présenter ses papiers d’identité” par le tribunal cantonal de Sakiet Ezzit dans la banlieue de Sfax. Le jour de son arrestation, il allait à la capitale pour récupérer son passeport, dont il est privé depuis 2004.

Slim Boukhdir, 39 ans, est le correspondant du journal panarabe basé à Londres Al Quds Al Arabi et du site Internet de la chaîne de télévision satellitaire Al-Arabiya. Par ailleurs, il publie des articles sur plusieurs sites Internet et notamment Tunisnews et Kantara.
