Mohammed Khatemi

Mohammed Khatemi

Iranian scholar and politician. He served as the fifth President of Iran from August 2, 1997 to August 2, 2005, and was succeeded by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He also acted as Iran's Minister of Culture in 1980s and 1990s. He attracted world attention in his first election to the presidency when as "a little known cleric, he captured almost 70% of the vote." His two terms as president, however, were widely regarded as unsuccessful in achieving their goals of making Iran more free and democratic.
