In 2019, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) estimated that 600,000 tons of plastic waste are dumped annually in the Mediterranean. Tunisia ranks in the top nine biggest polluters, contributing10,000 tons each year, Business Insider France reported. These alarming numbers as well as the ongoing debate gave way to the emergence of several national civil society organizations (CSOs) which adopted an environmentalist mission aiming to raise awareness about the severity of the crisis and to mobilize citizens to participate in curbing the harmful impact of this plague. While Tunisian national and local authorities often turn a blind eye to this issue, grassroot initiatives and organizations team up to implement joint projects and campaigns. Oceanis is one CSO that set out to warn about the urgency and importance of protecting the marine environment in Tunisia.
